Doctor-on-Duty Station [DOD]
On March 6 2004, the “doctor-on-duty” station [DOD/HAP] was established through close cooperation between the AZV and the Association of General Practitioners Aruba (HAVA), the association of physicians “Below the Bridge” and Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital. After extensive meetings on this topic, the doctor-on-duty station opened in the old office of Dr. de Windt in the Hospital. The Doctor-On-Duty station [HAP] was established to help patients seeking urgent medical care after regular office hours.
The objective of the DOD-station [HAP] is to have a general practicioner on a daily basis at a central location, close to the Hospital, intended for all patients of all the districts in Aruba. Previously a doctor ‘on duty’ had to see a patient in his office late at night or in the week-ends.
From May 1st 2004, no general practitioner from Below the Bridge will keep consultant at their offices, but at the HOH, in the office of the doctor-on-duty (now situated –still- in the office of Dr. R. Kock, nefrologist). The DOD [HAP] will shortly move to a location next to the renovated building of the Emergency Department, in front of the Hart & Long Function Room.
On the DOD [HAP] department we have 2 registered nurses and one nurses’ aid working who receive the patients, working as nurses and doing the administration as well. The HAP-personnel falls under the Head of the Emergency Department. In the last six months of 2005, DOD [HAP] has treated more than 10.000 patients.
DOD [HAP] works according to the following timetable:
From Monday to Friday 19.00 – 23.00
Saturday and Sunday 09.00 – 13.00 and 18.00 – 22.00
Holidays 09.00 – 13.00 and 18.00 – 22.00
The HOH hopes to aleviate the pressure on the Emergency Department with the establishment of the Dotors-on-Duty Station. [HAP].
